European life sciences venture capital firm HealthCap appointed Dr. Mårten Steen as co-managing partner, taking a seat alongside Founding Partner Björn Odlander.
Mårten became a partner at the Stockholm, Sweden-based HealthCap in 2010 and has played key roles in many of the firm´s most successful investments, including Wilson Therapeutics, a developer of treatments for ultra-rare orphan diseases that was sold in 2020 for about $800 million.
HealthCap also announced a new hire and several other promotions.
- Kristina Ekberg joined HealthCap as partner and general counsel in September. She previously served as a partner in the M&A practice group at Vinge, one of Sweden’s largest law firms, where she also led the Life Sciences and Healthcare sector group.
- Carl Kilander, a surgeon with scientific focus on cancer epidemiology and tumor biology pathways who joined HealthCap in 2019, has been promoted to partner.
- Alex Valcu, who joined HealthCap in 2004 and is currently principal at the firm, has also been promoted to partner and will continue to supervise the firm’s IT operations, in addition to assuming responsibility for general administrative practices.
- Georg Vo Beiske has been promoted to venture partner. Georg was recently appointed CEO of Tribune Therapeutics, an Oslo, Norway-based company that was co-created by HealthCap.

He noted that as HealthCap celebrates 25 years in operation, “[w]e have backed and built over 100 companies which has led to more than 25 pharmaceutical products and 50 innovative medical device products available to patients.”
