Dechert LLP announced Edward “Jay” Southgate has joined its global finance practice as an asset finance and securitization partner who will be based in New York.
Southgate joins Dechert from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, where he has been Of Counsel since October 2018. Before that, he worked for nearly four years in the investment management division of Goldman Sachs, with an emphasis on alternative capital markets and issues of regulatory compliance.
Laura Swihart, co-chair of Dechert’s global finance and real estate practice groups, said in a statement, “Jay is an accomplished lawyer and will be a fantastic addition to our firm. With significant experience in complex financings and securitizations across the residential mortgage-backed securities and asset finance and securitization spaces, and a particular focus on consumer lending and fintech, Jay’s practice has both breadth and depth.”
Southgate is an experienced capital markets lawyer. He has represented financial institutions, issuers, and underwriters in the private placement of residential mortgage and asset backed securities. Also, he has counseled institutions in connection with flow purchase and servicing arrangements with platform originators.
This new arrival helps deepen the bench of Dechert, coming as he does soon after the arrival Alon Goldberger, Ani Ravi, and Soo-Ah Nah, all leveraged finance partners; Jon Burke, a structured credit and collateralized loan obligations partner; Kathleen Mylod and Craig Brown, commercial real estate partners.
“I am very excited to join Dechert’s collaborative global finance group during such an exciting period of expansion for the practice and the firm more broadly,” Southgate, who received a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2004, added that he looks forward to “contributing to the firm’s strategic growth while continuing to provide exceptional advice to clients on their most innovative and complex financing and securitizations transactions.”
Dechert has 22 offices around the world and is headquartered in Philadelphia.
